Elmer the Elephant Story Time

I found an Elmer Color By Number coloring page on the blog Lines Across to start out with while we waited for everyone to arrive.

Opening:

Hello Song (Tune: Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush)

This is the way we wave hello, wave hello, wave hello.

This is the way we wave hello,

Hello, hello, hello!

This is the way we clap hello…

This is the way we tap hello…

Talkabout:

Hello! Today we’re going to be talking about what it means to be special. Everyone here is special in their own way and we’re going to read a book about an elephant who learns that even though he sticks out, he is very loved and appreciated.

1st Book:

Elmer by David McKee

Rather than just read the book, I found several crafts for Milk Jug elephants on Pinterest and decided to make my own. I made 1 Elmer elephant and 2 grey elephants. I also printed out key parts to the story and posted the scenes on four sides of a box. I used the box as a story prop, hiding one of the grey elephants inside (where Elmer rolled in the berries) so that I could take him out and have him be elephant colored.  Here’s a photo:

Activity:

Since I’d used foam squares to give my elephants a sensory aspect (duck tape feel versus foam feel), I’d made enough extra squares to print out a blank Elephant page and have the children glue the squares onto their own elephants with glue sticks.

I got the coloring sheet from this page: http://buggyandbuddy.com/sponge-painting-elmer-elephant/

Here’s their direct link to the actual coloring page: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-cVjZBMBNNXYzFwZHJxSmtMVGs/edit

2nd Book:

Elmer’s Special Day by David McKee

Closing:

Goodbye Song (Tune: The Farmer in the Dell)

We wave goodbye like this.

We wave goodbye like this.

We clap our hands for all our friends.

We wave goodbye like this.
